Tata Electronics to Begin Semiconductor Production with Mature Technology
Tata Electronics plans to launch India's first semiconductor manufacturing operation at its Dholera facility, initially using 90-nanometer process technology. This step highlights the challenges India faces in establishing a domestic chip industry while aiming to reduce import dependence.

Tata Electronics Pvt. will start semiconductor production at its Dholera facility, focusing on 90-nanometer technology, which is more mature than initially planned. The state's approval of 1.28 trillion rupees in new aid complements a prior $10 billion package, aimed at bolstering chip design and manufacturing.
Tata's facility, with a projected investment of $11 billion, is expected to produce 50,000 300 mm wafers monthly, targeting automotive and IoT applications. While the Dholera plant aims for initial operations by mid-2028, the shift to older technology reflects the complexities of building a domestic semiconductor base and may affect pricing dynamics in global supply chains.
