TNO Develops Photons-to-Chemicals Technology for Climate-Neutral Chemical Industry
TNO is pioneering the Photons-to-Chemicals (P2C) initiative to facilitate a climate-neutral chemical industry by harnessing sunlight to convert CO₂ and green hydrogen into valuable chemicals and fuels. This scalable technology supports smaller CO₂ sources, promoting a circular economy while enhancing the competitiveness of the Netherlands. Collaborating with 14 European partners, TNO's current projects, such as FOTON, aim to demonstrate efficient sunlight-driven processes for green hydrogen and methanol production.

TNO is advancing technologies to transition the chemical industry away from fossil resources towards a climate-neutral future by utilizing sunlight to convert CO₂ and green hydrogen into valuable chemicals and fuels. The Photons-to-Chemicals (P2C) initiative focuses on photocatalytic processes that transform CO₂ and green hydrogen into C1-chemicals and synthetic fuels, essential for the industry.
This flexible and scalable technology enables the use of smaller CO₂ sources, contributing to a circular economy and enhancing the competitiveness of the Netherlands. Collaborating with universities and businesses, TNO accelerates the path from laboratory to market application. Current projects, such as FOTON, involve 14 European partners working on pilot demonstrators for green hydrogen and methanol production, showcasing how sunlight-driven processes can operate efficiently despite variable energy supply.
