Travis County Initiates $75M Child Care Expansion with Scholarships and Quality Improvements
Travis County has launched a $75 million initiative aimed at enhancing affordable child care access for low-income families. The program includes funding for scholarships, after-school care, and a focus on improving provider quality.

Travis County is advancing a $75 million initiative to expand affordable child care access, following voter approval in 2024. Over $28 million has already been allocated, with additional contracts worth $17 million pending approval, primarily for after-school care for children aged 4 and above.
The Workforce Solutions Capital Area has received $17.34 million for 1,000 child care scholarships for children up to age 3 and $4.16 million for quality improvements at 150 providers. The county also allocates $4.85 million for extended prekindergarten and after-school programs.
Additionally, $500,000 has been directed to the Salvation Army for emergency child care for homeless families. Addressing child care during nontraditional hours is a priority, as a significant portion of working families requires such services. The initiative aims to enhance educational outcomes and support parents in workforce participation.
