Trump Administration Breaks Ground on Controversial NYC Gas Pipeline
The groundbreaking of the Northeast Supply Enhancement (NESE) pipeline in New York City aims to enhance regional energy supply, backed by the Trump administration. The project, which will deliver 400,000 dekatherms of natural gas daily, is projected to spur $1.8 billion in economic development and reduce electricity bills by $6 billion over 15 years.

The Northeast Supply Enhancement (NESE) pipeline, supported by the Trump administration, has commenced construction in New York City, intended to increase energy reliability during peak demand. The pipeline will run from Pennsylvania to Staten Island and the Rockaways, supplying 400,000 dekatherms per day, equivalent to the energy needs of 2.3 million homes.
Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Environmental Protection Secretary Lee Zeldin attended the groundbreaking, emphasizing the project’s anticipated economic benefits of $1.8 billion and significant electricity cost reductions. The project faced delays due to water quality concerns but was revived following a meeting between President Trump and Governor Kathy Hochul.
The NESE pipeline aims to address a 49% increase in natural gas demand since 2013, against a mere 26% expansion in pipeline capacity. Continued opposition from environmental groups highlights the ongoing tension between fossil fuel development and clean energy initiatives.
