Turkana Residents Oppose Land Acquisition for Airport and Military Base
Residents in Turkana County are protesting the government's plan to acquire 1,500 hectares for an airport and military base, citing threats to their grazing land and livelihood. The project, part of a national development agenda, has sparked community concerns over cultural heritage and economic stability.

The Kenyan government plans to acquire 1,500 hectares in Turkana County for an international airport and a Kenya Air Force base, drawing significant opposition from local residents. A public meeting in Kangatotha Ward revealed strong disapproval, where community members expressed fears that the project would disrupt their pastoral way of life, essential for their survival.
Scheduled public participation for the project is set for April 7-15, 2026. Local leaders emphasized that the land is crucial for livestock grazing and cultural heritage, while government officials argue it is vital for national development.
Critics warn that the aviation activities could harm local livestock and disrupt traditional lifestyles. Registration of communal land is encouraged to facilitate engagement with the government, as officials aim to ensure community voices are heard regarding land use.
