UK Advances in Waste-to-Sustainable Aviation Fuel Feasibility Assessment
The UK is moving towards practical applications of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), particularly through Waste-to-SAF projects. City Science, with support from Innovate UK, has developed a framework to evaluate regional feasibility for SAF production using residual municipal waste.

The UK Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Mandate is operational, prompting evaluations of domestic SAF production feasibility. City Science, in collaboration with the Heathrow Strategic Planning Group, created a framework assessing regional capacities for Waste-to-SAF, integrating waste availability, infrastructure, and policy conditions.
Important aspects include logistical connections, industrial land access, and commercial viability. The study indicates that local authorities must engage in strategic planning and collaboration to ensure the success of Waste-to-SAF initiatives.
This framework identifies credible opportunities while highlighting the need for regional partnerships and infrastructure development. It can guide stakeholders on whether to pursue further feasibility assessments or reconsider Waste-to-SAF approaches.
