UK Hosts Premiere of Documentary on South Africa's Hydrogen Crisis
The UK premiere of 'The Scramble for Hydrogen in South Africa' highlights the adverse effects of green hydrogen imports on local communities. The film underscores the reliance on platinum group metals sourced from South Africa, raising concerns over displacement and resource scarcity.

The UK aims for 10GW of green hydrogen production capacity by 2030, significantly increasing current global levels. Over £2 billion has been allocated for hydrogen projects across various regions, including Bradford and Teesside.
However, this rapid development is heavily dependent on platinum group metals imported from South Africa and Zimbabwe by Anglo American. This reliance is causing displacement and exacerbating water scarcity and energy poverty in local communities. The documentary produced by Corporate Europe Observatory, along with discussions featuring activists from both countries, questions the purported benefits of green hydrogen in addressing climate challenges.
