UK Institute Launches Hydrogen Test Facility for High-Temperature Research
The Materials Processing Institute has initiated a facility for testing materials in pure hydrogen at up to 1,650 °C, aimed at enhancing hydrogen technology adoption. This innovation addresses critical knowledge gaps in material behavior under hydrogen conditions.
The Materials Processing Institute (MPI) has developed a test facility capable of operating in a pure hydrogen atmosphere at temperatures reaching 1,650 °C. This initiative was part of the Prism programme, funded by Innovate UK, and involved converting existing infrastructure.
The facility focuses on material compatibility, degradation, and hydrogen embrittlement, providing essential data for plant operators and manufacturers. It aims to mitigate deployment risks associated with hydrogen technologies and expedite their development. The results from this facility could significantly influence the transition to hydrogen-based processes in various industries.
