UK Jet Fuel Supply Issues Highlight Need for Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production
The UK is facing challenges in jet fuel supply, prompting discussions on increasing local Sustainable Aviation Fuel production. The shift towards self-sufficiency in fuel refining is critical for energy resilience amid high global demand and prices.

The UK currently operates only four fuel refineries, a significant decline from 18 in the 1970s, raising concerns over energy resilience. The shift towards Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production, which can be derived from waste and renewable sources, is seen as a potential solution to reduce reliance on imports.
However, current SAF production is limited, with much of it imported from East Asia at a cost significantly higher than traditional fuels. Industry leaders emphasize that while increasing SAF production is essential, it requires substantial investment and is not an immediate fix. The aviation sector is also facing high jet fuel prices and potential shortages, underscoring the urgent need for a comprehensive strategy for fuel security in the UK.
