UK Maritime Nuclear Consortium Launched to Develop Standards for Nuclear-Powered Shipping

SYNTHETIC FUELSFUSION & ADVANCED NUCLEAR POWER

The UK has initiated the Maritime Nuclear Consortium, led by Lloyd's Register, to set international standards for nuclear-powered ships. This consortium includes key players from the nuclear, maritime, insurance, and regulatory sectors, such as Rolls-Royce, Babcock International Group, and Global Nuclear Security Partners.

The group aims to leverage advanced modular reactors (AMRs), which can operate for years without refueling and produce zero emissions. The initial program will focus on demonstrating a Statement of Design Acceptability for AMRs, developing a class certification framework, defining security and safeguards, and establishing insurability pathways for nuclear vessels. The UK aims to position itself as a leader in maritime nuclear standards amidst global competition, ensuring economic benefits and job creation in the maritime and nuclear sectors.
