UK MoD Plans Future Ice Patrol Ship to Replace HMS Protector
The UK Ministry of Defense is developing options for a future ice patrol ship to enhance capabilities in Antarctica and the Arctic. This initiative aligns with the Strategic Defense Review's focus on increased military presence in the North Atlantic and High North.

The UK Ministry of Defense is working on future ice patrol ship capabilities to support its interests in Antarctica and the Arctic. This initiative, confirmed by Minister Luke Pollard, is part of the Defense Investment Plan and follows the Strategic Defense Review (SDR) published in June 2025, which emphasizes the need for enhanced naval presence in the North Atlantic due to threats from Russian submarines.
HMS Protector, active since 2011, conducts regular patrols and hydrographic surveys in Antarctic waters, facing challenges in data collection due to environmental conditions. The development of new capabilities may address these challenges while reinforcing the UK's commitments to the Antarctic Treaty.
