UN Negotiations Resume on First Global Carbon Price for Shipping
The UN's International Maritime Organization (IMO) is set to discuss the Net-Zero Framework (NZF) for international shipping, which includes the world's first global carbon price. This framework could significantly impact the shipping industry by reducing reliance on fossil fuels and stabilizing fuel costs amidst current geopolitical tensions.

Negotiations for the Net-Zero Framework (NZF) at the IMO will occur in London from April 20 to May 1, 2026. The discussions will cover a carbon pricing mechanism aimed at generating $10-12 billion annually and addressing the role of biofuels in shipping's transition.
Support for the NZF comes from the EU, UK, China, and several other nations, although Japan and oil-producing countries seek to eliminate the carbon price, risking financial consequences for developing states. Analysis indicates that removing the carbon price could hinder the sector's energy transition and exacerbate fuel price volatility. The outcomes of upcoming meetings will determine the framework's future and its potential to facilitate an equitable transition in the shipping industry.
