Unilever's Pouso Alegre Factory Converts Mayonnaise Waste to Biogas
Unilever's initiative at its Pouso Alegre factory aims to convert mayonnaise waste into biogas, promoting a circular economy. This project is projected to lower CO₂ emissions by 350 to 400 tons annually and achieve financial returns within five years.

The biodigester project at Unilever's Pouso Alegre facility in Minas Gerais has been operational since 2023. It focuses on transforming organic byproducts from mayonnaise into biogas, addressing the challenge of decomposing stable mayonnaise.
The initiative, developed with Unicamp, features high automation and integrates biotechnology, chemical control, and energy reuse. The final phase, scheduled for 2026, seeks to improve the plant's energy self-sufficiency, reinforcing Unilever's commitment to emission reduction and the circular economy. Successful implementation may serve as a model for similar operations in the industry.
