University of Michigan Partners with Los Alamos for Nuclear Research Facility in Michigan
A proposed $1.2 billion research center in Ypsilanti Township, Michigan, aims to advance nuclear weapons simulations. The facility will utilize high-performance computing to model and analyze nuclear weapon capabilities, addressing the challenges of a testing moratorium since 1992.

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) plans to establish a $1.2 billion high-performance computing facility in Ypsilanti Township, Michigan, focused on nuclear weapons research. This facility will undertake simulations based on historical data from past nuclear tests, which are essential due to the U.S. cessation of live nuclear testing since 1992.
While 50% of the lab's activities will be defense-related, officials assert that no live testing will occur on-site. The lab is expected to increase its footprint by over 700,000 square feet by 2038. Local opposition is significant, with concerns over environmental impacts and safety risks, as well as potential targeting by adversaries. This initiative reflects a shift in U.S. policy towards modernizing nuclear arsenals amid increasing global tensions.
