UPM Innovates Wastewater Treatment for Biogas Production
Researchers at Universiti Putra Malaysia have developed two innovative treatment methods for wastewater and solid wastes, producing methane gas for energy use. The advancements in UASB and CSTR technologies are significant for sustainable waste management in the agriculture sector.

The UASB method treats wastewater from cow and chicken slaughter, achieving a transformation to meet environmental standards in 24 hours. This process yields 25 liters of methane gas, usable as cooking fuel and energy.
Concurrently, the CSTR method handles solid wastes, producing 42 liters of methane, surpassing UASB output, and generates digestate that serves as fertilizer. Both innovations have attracted attention from TNB Research Sdn Bhd, receiving substantial grants for further research. The potential application of these methods includes treating sewage and leachate, thereby enhancing waste management efficiency in the agriculture sector.
