U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Awards $400M for Lake Pontchartrain Storm Surge Protection
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has awarded a $419.7 million contract for the construction phase of the West Shore Lake Pontchartrain hurricane protection project. This initiative aims to enhance storm surge resilience for approximately 60,000 residents across several parishes, with completion expected by early 2030.

A contract exceeding $400 million has been awarded to Pittman-SeaLevel for constructing elements of the West Shore Lake Pontchartrain Hurricane and Storm Damage Risk Reduction project. The project encompasses 18.5 miles of levees and several infrastructure components including pump stations and floodwalls, with a total project cost now estimated at $3.7 billion, requiring an additional $1.27 billion for completion.
Currently, 11 of the planned 14 contracts have been awarded, with the remaining three expected to proceed through summer 2027. Despite the project's aim to protect against storm surges, it will not mitigate flooding from significant rainfall. Full hurricane protection will not be achieved until the project's completion in 2029.
