US Army Noncommissioned Officer Academy Reform Enhancements Announced
The US Army Noncommissioned Officer Academy (USANCOA) has undergone significant structural and curricular changes to align with modern operational needs. The redesigned Master Leader Course (MLC) and Sergeants Major Course (SMC) are set to better prepare senior enlisted leaders for expanded responsibilities in large-scale combat operations.

In March 2026, the Noncommissioned Officer Leadership Center of Excellence transitioned to become the US Army Noncommissioned Officer Academy (USANCOA) to unify NCO Professional Military Education under one entity. This change is accompanied by a realignment under Army University, enhancing the focus on training and education for NCOs.
The Master Leader Course (MLC) will extend from two to three weeks, increasing academic hours to approximately 144, emphasizing leadership and warfighting responsibilities, and integrating the Military Decision-Making Process (MDMP). Similarly, the Sergeants Major Course (SMC) has shifted its curriculum to prioritize warfighting relevance while maintaining institutional requirements.
By streamlining training and removing redundancies, the Army aims to prepare Sergeants Major for operational roles effectively. This comprehensive transformation reflects the Army's commitment to developing senior enlisted leaders capable of influencing outcomes in complex operational environments.
