U.S. Commerce Department's AFATS Aims to Boost Foreign Defense Sales
The America First Arms Transfer Strategy (AFATS) aims to enhance U.S. foreign defense sales, targeting a $318 billion contract record. This initiative seeks to streamline advocacy processes, elevate government support for defense exports, and engage industry stakeholders to secure a competitive edge globally.

The U.S. Department of Commerce has recently implemented the America First Arms Transfer Strategy (AFATS), designed to increase foreign defense sales of American-made products. Key objectives include reforming advocacy policy, empowering stakeholders, prioritizing high-level advocacy, and strengthening industry outreach.
AFATS aims to streamline U.S. government advocacy processes, with notable changes to approval procedures and license requirements already in place. In FY2026, the Commerce Department has reported 13 foreign defense contracts worth $9 billion, reflecting a significant increase in demand for U.S. advocacy support.
This strategic push is crucial as global competition intensifies, and the need for efficient support mechanisms grows. The effectiveness of these initiatives will depend on the continued alignment of government resources with industry needs.
