U.S. Defense Innovation: New Pathway for Technology Insertion Announced
The U.S. Department of Defense is set to implement an innovation insertion increment in fiscal year 2028. This mechanism aims to facilitate the transition of validated technologies from prototypes to operational use, addressing the persistent 'valley of death' in defense innovation funding.

Beginning in fiscal year 2028, U.S. portfolio acquisition executives will be mandated to allocate an innovation insertion increment in their budgets. This capital is intended to support the rapid integration of validated technologies into operational use, circumventing traditional procurement obstacles.
The initiative is a response to challenges faced by innovators, such as SpektreWorks, which successfully transitioned its Low-Cost Uncrewed Combat Attack System into use within eight months. If executed effectively, this increment could prevent funding from being diverted to legacy systems, promoting genuine technological advancement and enhancing military capabilities.
