US Engages South Korean Shipbuilders for Naval Vessel Capabilities Amid Ongoing Fleet Reliability Issues
The U.S. Department of Defense has requested information from South Korean shipbuilders regarding their capacity to construct naval vessels, including destroyers and tankers. This collaboration aligns with South Korea's $150 billion investment in U.S. shipbuilding projects, highlighting a strategic partnership in military shipbuilding amidst reports of reliability challenges in the U.S. Navy's advanced warships.

The U.S. Navy has solicited information from HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Hanwha Ocean Co., and Samsung Heavy Industries Co. regarding their shipbuilding capabilities for naval vessels. This initiative comes as South Korea commits $150 billion to support U.S. shipbuilding under the 'Make American Shipbuilding Great Again' initiative.
The RFIs were prompted by discussions between U.S. President Donald Trump and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung. Concurrently, a report has raised concerns about the reliability of U.S.
Navy warships, citing incidents of fires and electrical failures that indicate deeper systemic issues. Challenges such as limited shipyard capacity and a shortage of skilled workers could hinder operational readiness and maintenance capabilities for the U.S. Navy's advanced fleet.
