U.S. Enhances Military Cooperation with Kenya for Indian Ocean Security
The U.S. and Kenya are reinforcing their military partnership, focusing on maritime security and counterterrorism. This cooperation aims to strengthen Kenya's defense capabilities and regional stability in the Western Indian Ocean.

During a recent visit by Admiral George Wikoff, Commander of U.S. Naval Forces Europe and Africa, discussions emphasized enhancing Kenya's maritime security and counterterrorism capabilities. Key outcomes included the commissioning of a $750,000 Marine Range and Close Quarters Battle training complex at the Kenya Navy Base in Mombasa, designed to improve the operational readiness of Kenyan forces.
The visit also involved reviewing the Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) 2026 exercises, which aim to bolster regional maritime security. The ongoing partnership is crucial for regional stability and reflects the U.S. commitment to supporting Kenya as a security partner in East Africa amid rising external competition.
