US Government Gains from Intel Investment Amid Sector Volatility
The US government's stake in Intel, acquired through the CHIPS Act, has significantly increased in value, now worth $42 billion. This investment reflects a 372% rise since its inception in August 2025, despite ongoing concerns among some senators regarding the implications of government ownership in the semiconductor sector.

In August 2025, the US government converted $8.9 billion in CHIPS Act funding into a 10% equity stake in Intel. This investment has grown to approximately $42 billion, making it the largest asset in a portfolio of nearly $27 billion across 30 government equity positions.
However, political unease persists, with senators advocating for a limit on state holdings to eight years due to security concerns. The semiconductor sector faces challenges, with the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index down over 20% from its June peak. Analysts predict a 133% year-over-year profit increase in Q2 for the semiconductor industry, with Intel's performance to be assessed on July 23.
