Used Cooking Oil Emerges as Key Feedstock for Global Sustainable Aviation Fuel Market
Used cooking oil is increasingly recognized as a strategic feedstock for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), with global production projected to reach 1 million tons in 2024, doubling from 2023. This still accounts for only 0.3% of the aviation sector's total kerosene consumption. Regulatory mandates, particularly in the EU, are driving demand, aiming for 2% SAF usage by 2025. Major producers like Neste are expanding capacity, but the current supply of used cooking oil is inadequate, prompting investments in alternative feedstocks and technologies.

Used cooking oil is becoming a vital feedstock for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), intensifying competition among the US, China, and Europe. Global SAF production is set to reach 1 million tons in 2024, a twofold increase from 2023, yet it only meets 0.3% of the aviation sector's kerosene consumption of 350 million tons.
Regulatory mandates, especially in the EU, are pushing for 2% SAF by 2025. While major producers like Neste plan capacity expansions, the limited supply of used cooking oil is insufficient to satisfy future demand, leading to investments in alternative feedstocks and technologies.
