Utilities Enhance Security Measures Against Rising Threats to Power Grids
The Electricity Information Sharing and Analysis Center (E-ISAC) conducted a GridEx exercise from November 18-20, 2025, simulating coordinated attacks on power grids amidst a heat wave in the fictional nation of Beryllia. The U.S. and Canadian grids are experiencing increased physical threats, with over 3,500 security breaches reported in 2025. The exercise saw record participation, indicating heightened concern among utilities. New technologies, including AI and sensor fusion, are being tested to improve security against threats such as drones and vandalism.

The E-ISAC hosted GridEx from November 18-20, 2025, simulating power grid attacks in a scenario influenced by the upcoming World Cup. U.S. and Canadian grids face rising physical threats, with over 3,500 breaches reported in 2025.
Attendance was at an all-time high with over 28,000 individual participants. The increase in incidents includes vandalism and drone attacks. EPRI is testing sensor fusion technology to track drones, while AI is being integrated into security systems.
Prisma Photonics is deploying fiber sensing technology to enhance monitoring across infrastructure. Utilities are encouraged to apply lessons from training exercises to improve operational readiness.
