Uttarakhand Plans Geothermal Energy Pilot Project in Tapovan with ONGC Collaboration
Uttarakhand is initiating a pilot geothermal energy project in Tapovan to address rising electricity demand. The state has identified 44 potential geothermal sites and received support from Iceland's Verkis Consulting Engineers for studies. UJVN is set to develop the project, expected to take three to four years from approval to commissioning. Additionally, Uttarakhand is expanding small hydropower, solar, and battery energy storage systems while facing challenges in hydropower development due to environmental regulations.

Uttarakhand is launching a pilot geothermal energy project in Tapovan to satisfy increasing electricity demand. The state has identified 44 potential geothermal sites and has received consultancy from Iceland’s Verkis to assess the region.
UJVN is preparing to develop the project, with a timeline of three to four years for approval and commissioning. The state is also focusing on small hydropower and solar power, with approximately 1 GW of solar capacity achieved.
Challenges include regulatory hurdles for hydropower and rising energy demand. The state is looking for private sector participation in geothermal energy after demonstrating its viability.
