Uzmar Delivers World's First Battery-Methanol Harbour Tug to Svitzer
Uzmar Shipyard has completed sea trials for Svitzer Balder, the first battery-methanol harbour tug, set for operation in Gothenburg. The vessel features a robust hybrid power system, positioning it as a leader in electric tug technology.

Uzmar Shipyard is finalizing the delivery of Svitzer Balder, the first battery-methanol harbour tug, following successful sea trials in early April. This 35-meter tug boasts 88 tonnes of bollard pull with a combined propulsion system consisting of a 6,000-kWh battery, two 350-kW methanol engines, and a 2,000-kW diesel engine.
Designed by Robert Allan Ltd, it is recognized as the most powerful electric escort tug globally. The construction involved partners like AYK Energy and BMA Technology, enhancing the vessel's electric-powered propulsion with Kongsberg Maritime azimuth thrusters. The operational deployment in Gothenburg highlights the shift towards sustainable maritime solutions, potentially influencing industry standards for future tug designs.
