The uMhlathuze Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal faces severe power outages due to vandalism at two substations, resulting in significant financial losses. Mayor Xolani Ngwezi reported damages of R800,000 at one site and total losses nearing R1.6 million. Over three years, vandalism-related losses exceed R280 million, impacting municipal finances and infrastructure security. Plans are being developed to enhance protection of infrastructure through collaboration with community stakeholders. The municipality is also addressing high rates of gender-based violence in Ward 1.

Persistent power outages in uMhlathuze Municipality, KwaZulu-Natal, are attributed to vandalism targeting the Grantham and Aquila substations, causing blackouts lasting over 24 hours.
