Vioneo Withdraws €1.5 Billion Green Plastics Project from Antwerp to China
Vioneo has canceled its €1.5 billion green plastics factory project in Antwerp, opting to relocate it to China due to better access to green methanol and more favorable commercial conditions. The facility, which was expected to produce 300,000 tons of polyethylene and polypropylene annually starting in 2028, represents a setback for sustainability efforts in Belgium and the Netherlands amid rising energy costs. The Antwerp port authority noted that this decision highlights ongoing structural issues within the European industrial and energy systems.

Vioneo, a Danish chemical company, has canceled its planned €1.5 billion factory for green plastics in Antwerp, opting to relocate the project to China. The facility was set to produce 300,000 tons of polyethylene and polypropylene annually from green methanol starting in 2028.
Vioneo cites better access to green methanol and more favorable commercial conditions in China as the main reasons for the move. This decision is viewed as a setback for the sustainability efforts in the ports of Belgium and the Netherlands, where companies are struggling with high energy costs. The Antwerp port authority acknowledged that the departure reflects structural issues in the European industrial and energy systems.
