Wien Energie Launches 120-Ton Heat Pump at Spittelau Plant to Heat 16,000 Households
Wien Energie has launched a 120-ton heat pump at the Spittelau waste incineration plant, which will provide heating and hot water for 16,000 households in Vienna by utilizing waste heat from flue gas cleaning. The €40 million investment aims to enhance energy efficiency at the facility, which is now the most efficient waste incineration plant in Central Europe. Looking ahead, Wien Energie plans to significantly increase renewable heat production by 2040, focusing on various sources including waste incineration and deep geothermal energy.

Wien Energie has activated a 120-ton heat pump at the Spittelau waste incineration plant, utilizing waste heat from flue gas cleaning to provide heating and hot water for 16,000 households in Vienna. The investment for this project amounts to 40 million euros.
The pump enhances energy extraction from the thermal energy released during waste incineration, contributing to making Spittelau the most efficient waste incineration plant in Central Europe. Wien Energie plans to expand renewable heat production significantly by 2040, targeting waste incineration (21%), large heat pumps (31%), deep geothermal energy (26%), and a green power plant (22%) for heat generation. Additionally, they are developing a deep geothermal energy facility in Seestadt Aspern with OMV and aim to invest 660 million euros in renewable heat generation and circular economy by 2030.
