Wärtsilä Aims for Decarbonization in Shipping and Energy Industries
Wärtsilä, under CEO Håkan Agnevall, is focused on decarbonizing shipping and energy sectors, which constitute 60% and 40% of its business respectively. The company is developing technology for engines that run on ammonia, hydrogen, and green methanol but faces challenges in scaling these solutions and aligning infrastructure globally. With a €250m investment in its Sustainable Technology Hub in Finland, Wärtsilä seeks to foster innovation and collaboration with partners to accelerate the transition to zero-carbon operations.

Wärtsilä is committed to decarbonizing the shipping and energy sectors, led by CEO Håkan Agnevall. The company operates in two industries: marine (60% of business) and energy (40%). It is focusing on developing engines capable of using ammonia, hydrogen, and green methanol.
However, challenges include the need for infrastructure capable of supplying zero-carbon fuels and regulatory pressures. Wärtsilä has invested €250m in its Sustainable Technology Hub in Finland to promote innovation and collaboration, aiming to create a viable ecosystem for low-carbon operations. The company is also forming new partnerships to enhance fuel production and infrastructure globally.
