Abinader Secures $400M Loan for Punta Cana-Bávaro Water Projects
The Dominican Republic has signed a $400 million loan agreement with the Inter-American Development Bank for water and sanitation initiatives in Punta Cana-Bávaro. This project aims to enhance public health and support sustainable tourism while expanding access to potable water.

The Dominican Republic has finalized a $400 million loan agreement on February 19, 2026, with the Inter-American Development Bank for water and sanitation projects in Punta Cana-Bávaro. The National Institute of Drinking Water and Sewerage will implement the project, which focuses on improving access to drinking water and sanitation systems, while also promoting water reuse.
The loan features a variable interest rate based on SOFR, with repayment over 19.5 years in 39 semiannual installments, starting from October 15, 2031. Approval from Congress and the Executive Branch is required for the agreement to take effect, and it will lapse if not activated within one year. This initiative is expected to bolster public health and support sustainable tourism in the region.
