India's Water Security Strategy: Focus on Wastewater Reuse
India aims to enhance water security by targeting improved wastewater reuse by 2030. Current urban sewage generation far exceeds treatment capacity, indicating a critical need for effective resource management.

India's agenda for water security includes ambitious goals such as achieving Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 and Water Vision 2047. Urban centers generate over 0.7 lakh million litres per day of sewage, while treatment capacity is only about 0.2 lakh MLD.
Effective reuse of treated wastewater is essential, as demonstrated by cities like Chennai and Surat, where significant amounts of treated water are repurposed for industrial use. National policies, such as the National Framework on Safe Reuse of Treated Water and Draft Wastewater Management Rules, support this initiative.
However, a lack of standards and stakeholder engagement leads to underutilization. Establishing a national policy for treated water reuse is crucial for aligning governance structures and facilitating demand creation. Enhanced investment and technology integration will support the scaling of wastewater reuse, fostering sustainable practices across sectors.
