Acciona Develops Advanced RO System for Enhanced Desalination Efficiency
Acciona has tested a new reverse osmosis system aimed at improving seawater desalination efficiency. The project, part of LIFE INDESAL, demonstrates significant energy savings and potential for increased sustainability in water-stressed regions.

Acciona's next-generation reverse osmosis system has successfully completed nearly two years of testing at the San Pedro del Pinatar desalination plant in Spain. This pilot project, under the LIFE INDESAL initiative, shows a reduction in energy consumption via low-pressure multistage reverse osmosis, yielding permeate water with total dissolved solids below 200 mg/L.
Additionally, the system harnesses renewable energy from brine and can generate its own cleaning chemicals, enhancing operational self-sufficiency. With a total budget of €3.1 million, LIFE INDESAL includes partnerships with the University of Cantabria and other entities. This innovation is crucial as global water scarcity intensifies, addressing efficiency and sustainability in desalination.
