AE Expeditions Successfully Completes First Biofuel Trial on Sylvia Earle
AE Expeditions has conducted a successful biofuel trial on its ship, Sylvia Earle, marking a key step in its efforts to lower greenhouse gas emissions. The biofuel, certified for sustainability, demonstrated an estimated 90% reduction in emissions compared to traditional marine fuel, with no adverse effects on engine performance. The company plans to continue these initiatives with further trials as its fleet returns to Europe in 2026. Sustainability manager Sasha Buch emphasized the importance of reducing emissions in environmentally sensitive regions and highlighted the trial's potential to advance sustainable fuels in the maritime industry.
AE Expeditions has achieved a pivotal milestone with its inaugural biofuel trial aboard the Sylvia Earle, underscoring its dedication to minimizing greenhouse gas emissions. This successful trial, which utilized a biofuel certified for sustainability, showcased an impressive estimated 90% reduction in fuel-related emissions compared to conventional marine fuels. Importantly, the trial was executed without any detrimental impact on engine performance, reaffirming the viability of biofuels in marine operations.
As part of a broader strategy to enhance sustainability, AE Expeditions plans to expand upon this accomplishment with additional trials scheduled for 2026, coinciding with the return of its fleet to Europe. Sylvia Earle previously made headlines in May 2025 as the first ship in the Infinity Class to trial hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) along the Spanish coastline, further demonstrating the company’s commitment to innovative, eco-friendly practices.
Sasha Buch, the sustainability manager at AE Expeditions, acknowledged the urgency of reducing emissions, particularly when operating in some of the world’s most climate-sensitive regions. This pioneering biofuel trial not only provided essential insights for future testing but also supports the wider adoption of sustainable fuels within the maritime sector, highlighting the industry’s critical role in addressing climate change.
