Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation Converts Cattle Waste into Biogas and Electricity
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has initiated biogas generation from cattle waste, positioning the city as a model for zero-waste management. The relocation of stray cattle and waste conversion into energy aligns with environmental sustainability goals.

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has implemented biogas plants at the Bakrol and Danilimda facilities to utilize cattle waste, producing approximately 46 kg of biogas and 35 units of electricity daily. The Bakrol facility accommodates 750 cattle on a 50,000 square meter site, generating around 2,800 kg of dung.
The 'Stray Cattle Nuisance Prevention and Control Policy' was introduced in 2023 to manage stray cattle and support their welfare. This initiative has eliminated the need for 27 LPG cylinders monthly, saving about Rs 10,350 in electricity costs.
Additionally, the slurry from biogas production is used as fertilizer, and the program supports employment for 13 workers. The AMC's efforts position Ahmedabad towards becoming a zero-waste city.
