Antwerp Chemical Firms Initiate Wastewater Reuse Testing
Chemical companies in Antwerp are piloting a demo plant for wastewater conversion, enhancing drought resilience. This initiative is part of the CHERISH2O project, which will explore circular water use in the port's chemical sector over two years.

A demonstration plant in the Port of Antwerp has been commissioned by chemical companies to convert wastewater into industrial process water. The facility, located at TotalEnergies, has a capacity of 1.5 m³ per hour and will be tested for six months, processing wastewater from five companies across two clusters.
The project aims to assess the feasibility of reusing treated wastewater and is part of the CHERISH2O initiative, which began in September 2024. Ultimately, twelve chemical firms will be able to utilize the treated water, with insights from the project expected to support broader adoption of circular water networks. The collaboration involves multiple stakeholders, including VITO and essenscia, and is backed by the Flemish Blue Deal.
