Appeal Filed Against Cork's 90,000t Anaerobic Digestion Plant by Local Residents

Nephin Renewable Gas's proposed 90,000-tonne anaerobic digestion (AD) plant in Corracunna, near Mitchelstown, is under appeal after Cork County Council granted planning permission subject to 57 conditions. The facility, designed to produce biomethane from various agricultural residues, would process up to 78,000 tonnes of whole digestate annually.

Local residents Martina and Billy Finn argue that the development would increase traffic hazards and pose health and safety risks due to potential gas leaks. They claim the plant would negatively impact air quality and be visually intrusive, detracting from views of the Galtee Mountains. In response to the planning decision made on November 27th, the Mitchelstown Biogas Concern Group was formed to oppose the development, citing significant safety risks in the area.
