Avinor Launches Liquefied Biogas Power Pilot at Svalbard Airport, Norway
Avinor has launched a pilot project at Svalbard Airport to produce electricity and heat from liquefied biogas, aiming to meet 100% of the airport's energy needs once fully operational. The combined heat and power plant is currently in a trial phase expected to last about one year, addressing the 20% of Avinor's total emissions attributed to the airport's energy consumption in 2022.

Avinor, the state-owned airport operator in Norway, has initiated a pilot project at Svalbard Airport to generate electricity and heat using liquefied biogas. The combined heat and power (CHP) plant is intended to meet 100% of the airport's on-site electricity and heating needs once fully operational.
Currently, the project is in a trial phase expected to last around one year. In 2022, emissions from electricity and heating at Svalbard Airport constituted approximately 20% of Avinor's total emissions.
