BHP Initiates Biofuel Blend Trials to Reduce Maritime Emissions
BHP Group Ltd is testing a multi-feedstock biofuel blend designed to decrease maritime emissions during voyages. This pilot project, in collaboration with the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation, aims to assess the viability and performance of biofuels derived from used cooking oil and animal fats.

BHP commenced a pilot project testing a new biofuel blend on the Berge Lyngor, a bulk carrier transporting iron ore from Western Australia to China. The bio-blend consists of a 50% tallow-derived biodiesel and a 50% used cooking oil methyl ester, bunkered in Singapore.
The trial aims to evaluate fuel quality, operational challenges, and the integration of multiple feedstocks, as the supply of used cooking oil is nearing its limits. The project is co-funded by Singapore's Maritime & Port Authority. This initiative could significantly impact the shipping sector by providing alternative fuel sources and enhancing procurement flexibility.
