Cameroon Signs 856.8 Billion CFA Francs for Energy Recovery from Waste in Douala and Yaoundé
Cameroon's Minister of Housing and Urban Development signed two memorandums of understanding on March 12, 2026, with Thermosun Cameroon and Blue Energy Holding, committing 856.8 billion CFA francs for waste treatment and energy recovery initiatives in Douala and Yaoundé. Douala produces around 2,700 tons of waste daily, with 7 billion CFA francs allocated for waste management in 2026.
Hysacam won contracts exceeding 45 billion CFA francs in Yaoundé, but structural issues persist. Thermosun plans two plants to convert waste into biogas and electricity, while Blue Energy proposes a broader project. 30% of the funding is expected from the state, although details are unclear.
Waste tax revenues from 2020 to 2022 totaled 60.6 billion CFA francs, insufficient to meet stabilization needs for collection services. The success of these initiatives will determine if Cameroon can establish a sustainable waste-to-energy industry.
