Cargill Proposes 1.1Mt Canola Crushing Plant in Rockingham, WA
Cargill has submitted plans for a canola-crushing plant, named Project Crux, in Rockingham, Western Australia, capable of processing 3,000 tonnes per day, totaling 1.1 million tonnes annually. This development follows Cargill's exclusive lease negotiations with the WA Government starting in March 2024.
The estimated construction cost is up to $600 million. The facility will include seed silos, oil storage, and loading infrastructure linked to the Kwinana Grain Terminal operated by CBH. Cargill plans to lease the site for 60 years and is exploring a joint venture with CBH.
The project is part of a broader effort to increase WA's canola-crushing capacity, which currently stands at approximately 60,000 tonnes. The state is projected to produce 4.17 million tonnes of canola in 2025-26, supporting the potential for increased crushing capacity amid rising global canola oil prices and federal support for biofuels.
