Cedar Rapids Initiates Major Flood Control Project Near Cedar River
The City of Cedar Rapids has commenced a significant flood mitigation project, involving a 1,900-foot floodwall and various protective measures. This initiative is part of the 'Reach 4' plan, responding to the 2008 flood and expected to complete its first phase by 2028, coinciding with the flood's 20th anniversary.

Cedar Rapids has broken ground on a flood control project near the Cargill plant, featuring a 1,900-foot floodwall, pump station, and erosion protection. This project is part of the city's 'Reach 4' flood mitigation strategy initiated after the catastrophic flood in 2008.
The project manager noted that the downtown section will be 2,000 feet long and additional contracts are being pursued to complete floodwall gaps. Funding for the project is divided, with half covered by the city and the remainder through federal and state sources. Delays are anticipated due to inflation and real estate access issues, with the first phase expected to conclude in 2028.
