Chernivtsi Plans Biofuel-Powered Waste-to-Energy CHP Plant with Swedish Partners
Chernivtsi officials plan to build a biofuel-powered combined heat and power (CHP) plant, utilizing waste as fuel, with a feasibility study funded by 29.4 million hryvnias in 2025. The project, in partnership with Swedish firms Swedfund International AB and SWECO International AB, aims to generate electricity from garbage and reduce landfill waste, aligning with Ukraine's energy decentralization strategy. Construction is expected to take two to three years, while a gas-powered cogeneration plant has already saved 23.5 million UAH this year, with another set to begin operations soon.

Chernivtsi officials are set to construct a combined heat and power (CHP) plant powered by biofuel, utilizing waste as fuel. Mayor Roman Klichuk announced that 29.4 million hryvnias have been secured for a feasibility study in 2025, with further funding sought following project documentation.
The CHP plant, to be located at a landfill, aims to generate electricity from garbage, aligning with Ukraine's energy decentralization strategy. Chernivtsiteplokomunenergo is the project owner, having partnered with Swedish firms Swedfund International AB and SWECO International AB for financial support and consulting services.
The initiative, expected to take two to three years to construct under favorable conditions, will also reduce landfill waste by using biofuel and refuse-derived fuel (RDF). Additionally, Chernivtsi has launched a gas-powered cogeneration plant, saving 23.5 million UAH this year, with another plant expected to begin operations by the end of January.
