The European Union has set an ambitious goal to eliminate dependence on fossil fuels and reduce fossil CO2 emissions by 100% by 2050. As part of this effort, the European Commission launched the REPowerEU Plan in 2022, targeting the production of 35 billion cubic meters of biogas by 2030, up from the current 6.4 billion cubic meters.

Agriculture, contributing 3.2% of global greenhouse gas emissions, faces challenges from inefficient organic waste management. The EU's bioeconomy strategy aims to convert biogenic waste into valuable products.

Anaerobic digestion is identified as a key technology for producing renewable biogas, digestate, and biogenic CO2. Although biogas production facilities in the EU are increasing, challenges remain, including technological improvements and regulatory standards for digestate quality. The BIVALIA project promotes integrated biorefinery approaches to enhance the viability of biogas production and support circular economy goals.
