France Becomes European Leader in Biomethane with 803 Injection Sites by 2025
By 2025, France is set to lead Europe in biomethane production, achieving 803 injection sites and generating 13.6 TWh annually, covering 3.9% of national gas consumption. This development supports France's energy independence and reduces reliance on fossil fuels.

In 2025, France is expected to operate 803 biomethane injection sites, producing 13.6 TWh of energy, which is approximately 3.9% of its national gas consumption. This capacity positions France ahead of Germany in the biomethane sector, enhancing its energy independence.
The production of biomethane involves fermenting organic materials, including agricultural waste and food scraps, in methanization units. Looking towards 2030, France aims to increase biomethane production to 44 TWh, necessitating an expansion of methanization sites and financial support through biogas production certificates. The ongoing development of complementary technologies, such as e-methane and Power-to-Gas, will diversify renewable gas sources.
