Galveston Initiates Major Flood Management Upgrade with Pump Stations
Galveston is transitioning from a gravity-fed drainage system to incorporating stormwater pump stations to improve flood management. The first pilot project is underway, and a second project at 14th Street is awaiting final funding approval.

Galveston is advancing its flood management strategy by constructing its first stormwater pump station in the South Shore Drive Drainage Basin, initiated in December. A second project at the 14th Street Basin, estimated at $48 million, is in the final pre-construction phase, pending a benefit-cost analysis for $38 million in federal funding.
Current drainage relies solely on gravity, limiting capacity and efficiency, especially during storms when key intersections, like 14th and Harborside, frequently flood. The new pump stations are expected to expedite water removal, reducing street inundation time significantly. However, complete flood elimination is not anticipated, indicating ongoing challenges in managing stormwater effectively.
