GMT and SWEN Expand UK Biomethane Infrastructure with Integrated Development Model
GMT, supported by SWEN's Impact Fund for Transition, is enhancing the UK biomethane sector through a standardized model that facilitates renewable gas production and CO₂ valorization. With an expanded project portfolio from 3 to 13 and a total investment of £400 million, GMT focuses on leveraging local agricultural biomass in the East of England. The favorable UK regulatory framework and rising demand for decarbonization solutions from maritime and industrial sectors are shaping GMT's strategic shift towards broader market engagement.

GMT, a UK biomethane platform supported by SWEN's Impact Fund for Transition, is advancing the biomethane sector by utilizing a standardized, platform-based model for renewable gas production. This approach allows for the injection of biomethane into the grid or its sale to industrial and maritime customers while capturing and valorizing renewable CO₂ and producing certified biofertilizers.
Since SWEN's initial investment, GMT's project portfolio has expanded from 3 to 13 projects, with a total capital expenditure of £400 million. The focus is primarily on the East of England, leveraging local agricultural biomass to minimize logistics costs and emissions.
The supportive UK regulatory framework, with guaranteed tariffs for biomethane, enhances project financing and revenue visibility. Increasing demand from maritime and industrial end-users for decarbonization solutions from 2028 has also influenced GMT's commercial strategy, transitioning from specialist traders to broader market engagement.
