AMMONIABIOFUELSMETHANOL

Grimaldi Group has commissioned nine ropax vessels from China Merchants Jinling Shipyard for approximately $1.5 billion. The vessels will feature engines capable of running on methanol, aligning with net-zero emissions goals when green fuels become competitively priced.

Four vessels will operate under the Italian flag with Grimaldi Lines, two under Greek subsidiary Minoan Lines, and three will serve Finnlines in the Baltic Sea. Deliveries are scheduled between 2028 and 2030.

The vessels will include technology for optimized hull designs and energy-efficient systems, reducing CO2 emissions by over 50% compared to existing ships. Grimaldi's newbuilding program also includes 17 ammonia-ready PCTC vessels.

The company plans to utilize biofuels for existing ships while developing methanol and ammonia for new builds. Grimaldi is retrofitting its fleet for shore power connectivity and aims to enhance energy efficiency across its operations.
