Humboldt Wastewater Treatment Facility Set for Full Operation This Summer
The City of Humboldt's new wastewater treatment facility is on track to achieve full operational capacity by summer 2026. The project, which began with a feasibility study in 2017, has faced challenges including budget constraints and weather conditions but has secured significant funding to support its completion.

The Humboldt wastewater treatment facility, with a total cost of approximately $41 million, is anticipated to be fully operational by the summer of 2026. This includes $35 million for the treatment system and $6 million for upgrades to sewage lift stations, funded by $27 million from the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) and $14 million from city resources.
The facility uses a Lagoon/SAGR system, effective for cold climates, and can support a population of 10,000 with potential expansion to 14,500. The Public Works Department has been overseeing operations since March 30, 2026, while final performance verification is ongoing. The project has benefited from the expertise of consultants and a contractor with relevant experience, despite facing weather-related challenges.
