Idaho DEQ Allocates $40.5 Million for Sandpoint Wastewater Treatment
Sandpoint, Idaho receives $40.5 million from the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality for wastewater treatment infrastructure. The funding includes a $38 million low-interest loan and $2.5 million in grants, supporting the city's phased construction efforts.

The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality has awarded Sandpoint $40.5 million for its wastewater treatment plant, primarily through a $38 million low-interest loan. The city seeks an additional $22 million for the first construction phase and aims to implement an alternative treatment method to reduce costs by approximately $10 million.
This alternative method, known as 'wet weather treatment,' would enable the construction of a smaller plant by utilizing primary filtration and disinfection for diluted inflow and infiltration (I&I) water. City officials anticipate no construction will begin until 2027, as they navigate a lengthy permitting process amidst a backlog of over 60 permits. The project is supported by a $130 million bond approved by residents in November 2025.
